I'll edit this, after I post the movies. Right now, let's start with some pics!

First of all.....a big "THANKYOU!" to all of you Sanctuary people, who came up with these Award of Independent Spirit Plaques! I thought Mario was going to cry, when he presented these. His eyes were watering up. This was the most personable, emotional of all the IndieMeets.

Okay, onto the story of the IndieMeet. As a lot of you know, just days before the Meet, sets from EXILE were still up in the yard. I took them down to make room for a center yard screen. Plus, they were getting tore up and weren't very safe.

This is the cockpit interior:

In the middle of the yard was a big 25' x 6' trench, which allowed us to hide this hallway set in the ground.

I tore these down and was left with this huge hole! Like an idiot, I shoveled in a couple tons of dirt, before I came to my senses and rented a tractor!

The next day, Tiffany flew in, then Tim Stover came over and we built the "Stargate" style frame for the 10' movie screen. I know Tiff has some pics of that.

Debbie arrived from Bakersfield. I wasn't expecting her to look as beautiful as she was. She writes a lot on this forum, but is very shy, in person. Here she is with Jessica McClure:

And, here is the man, himself - Richard McClure. This is the guy who really pushed for this to happen, at the very beginning. With the mullet gone, he looks ready to lead an SG-1 team through the STARGATE. Very Happy

Most of the following pics are from Heather's and Alan's cameras.

I didn't know what he would be like, in person. Mario's humor is often mistaken for a more brazen internet attitude. Well, this is one of the most sincere, standup guys, I have ever met. We had a few phone conversations, before the meet, so I have got to know him a lot better.

His friends were a lot of fun, as well. Brett is the kind of guy that I want in one of my flicks. From left to right - Tiffany, Brett, Otis, Heather, "Tiny", and Mario.

We had a lot of fun with the flicks - NIGHTCAST, RECON 2022 and THE RAPTURE. All 3 of those were visually magnificent and big, by no budget standards. A big thankyou to Johnny Wu and Christian Viel for donating movies!!

Playing in EXILE's would be slot, a little surprise came from a last minute feature, made for a couple thousand bucks - VEGASLAND. It started out with probably too much narration and a long poker scene. But,........once it got started and the bad cop showed up, this movie held everyone's attention! The writing and dialogue was strong, as was much of the acting.

I'm not saying this, because Ken and Tom (the makers) were there. I just wasn't expecting it to be my favorite of the features. Here's Tom:

His co-director, Ken, along with Tiffany and Langley.

Not to slight you guys, but there was another movie that I would call my fave of the Meet - NERO PLAYS THE FIDDLE. The short movie, by Gilbert Cuevas and John Mullay. I'll have to look, but I don't think I have any pictures of Gilbert, Jay and their friends, as they showed up, later.

Their movie was about a reality TV concept guy, who keeps getting rejected by the executive panel. They give him a job firing ultimatum, so the concept guy hires a street poet bum to recite poetry, then urinate on the carpet in the executives' office. This revenge act, by the concept guy, is applauded by the panel, which greenlights the bum, who becomes America's biggest star!

The way this movie was made was just a riot. Every weird angle and word of dialogue was meticulously planned....and it worked. Very smart and funny.

Saturday was Demo day, so I did 3 of them, starting with a camera angle demo. Now that I think about it, I forgot to present Dutch Angle, even though I had it written down! Here's a shot of Scott Anderson and I working out the infamous Dolly in/Zoom out shot:

I also did an Airsoft gun demo, using examples from EXILE's big shoot out sequence. Some of the tree branches had to be matted, since the soldiers were firing from behind them.

My last demo was showing the sounds of different synthesizers:

The demo that probably blew the most people away was Mario's props and silicone presentation. Top notch!

Of course, Sunday was barbecue and swim night:

Thanks to some unusually cold May temps, only a few of us actually swam. Jessica McClure and the Conway kids:

The firepit remained the most popular spot. This year's pit was the biggest, yet. After the meet was over, I turned the screen structure into a fog room, but you can see how big the pit was, next to it.

Denise and friend:

Jake and Tim:

Sheila, Josh and Gene Kelly:

Chris and Paul:

Tiffany and Terry:

For some reason, there was an intense marshmallow fight, that got very sticky!

BTW, we watched quite a few movies. Additional thanks to Raymond Clark for sending us his shorts!

*sob* and once again, I missed the party... I think I'll start planning NOW for next year's indiemeet unless Mike is planning one in Fall or winter (I wouldn't mind).

Thanks again for the opportunity Mike!

You are both very welcome Mike... The awards are well deserved and we felt that it was the least we could do to honor our forum members.

Thank you for the opportunity to present and discuss fabrication methods with all the people whom attended. Everyone was so insightful and generous. I just wish we had more time.

"Will" apologizes to our captive audience for the cruddy version of our trailer and he promises a much better version soon.

Apparently he did not intentionally re-edit my original version... He merely could not gain access the clips due to a hard drive failure, so he worked with what he had instead of just telling me what happened.

It's a good thing I always have a back-up for my back-up.

By the way, the Chocolate Chip cookies were delicious and the Carrot Cake was phenomenal. Very Happy

Awesome recap! Some of those I missed look like a lot of fun. Congrats Mike and Sheila, well deserved recognition for keeping the Indie spirit alive!

I didn't even realize after seeing those photos how much you've renovated your backyard. Good stuff!

I'm just going to walk off my job next year if they don't let me go.

It just keeps getting better and better every year.

Glad to see this one was as much, if not more, of a success as the others have been.

Good times...good times.

This is the post I promised Richard. I was just going to post under Mike's login but aparently he felt that would be co-dependent of me so he signed me up. Glad to be here for real but I'm more of a tag-a-long in the indie film world.
Anyway, I wanted to thank everyone who came this year. It was the crowd that made it what it was. Mike and I love to put it on but without an excited, participating, crowd who really love what they do and want to connect with other people who also love what they do, it would all fall flat.
Thank you for all the help with equipment set up, fire building, beer runs, vaccuuming (Debbie and Tiffany) and even a bit of baby watching here and there (you know who you are). It was great to meet people who we will hope to see at future meets and great to see some really well done film work. My favorite part from my background spot in the kitchen was watching so many of you Sanctuary people meet face to face for the first time. Very moving. Just so you know, we went through five recipes of
chocolate chip cookie dough and that's without Parker. It could be a record. Thank you all for all of the nice comments, believe me, it is our pleasure and we hope to see all of you and many more next year.
I will say officially that Indiemeet 2009 will happen....same Dark Knight time, same Dark Knight channel.
Cheers.

mmmm... I thought I smelled something good cooking. Hi Sheila and Welcome to The Sanctaury!
(thanks for posting Smile )

Very cool recap and pics Mike, and yeah, it is cool to see what the backlot looked like prior to the meet (appreciate the work done)... but you could have left that hallway pit, would have made a place for an even greater fire Wink

Looking forward to the next years Vegas Indiemeet Smile Cool

This was my very first indie meet and I could not have hoped for a better experience or better people to meet in person. Not to mention the pleasure of seeing my fellow cohorts from EXILE whom I hadn't seen in a little over a year.
Mike and Sheila and their kids are like family to me at this point. I could not have been more comfy staying at their house. Mike and Sheila, I thank you deeply, as you both know how badly I needed not only the indie meet but the time away.
I really can not say enough about the whole experience.
I'm including a few more pics here. And will have more to add as I size them for the internet.
First, another beautiful photo of Debbie. What a wonderful adorable lady! My pleasure meeting you Deb.

Setting up the portal screen. Too awesome.

Allen and I. And what a wonderful guy he is! He shared some really cool stories with me, was warm and friendly and I can't say enough.

Heather and I...well, what do I say, I just love the woman! I miss her already!

Marion, Deb, and myself. Mario, pleasure was all mine. Your a truly warm and friendly and talented person.

Mike and I during the portal screen building. Um...for the record, Mike and Tim did all the work. I had fun um....well...supervising! LOL

And yes, one more marshmallow photo. Sometimes its just fun to act like a kid again!

Sheila,

Awesome! It's nice to see that you finally signed up.

I admire your modesty but we all know that you and Mike are a filmmaking powerhouse. Loved all the food! I even got heartburn trying to eat everything and that says a lot considering the fact that I usually don't eat very much.

Mike, you are a true friend and I admire all your hard work and determination. Was there ever a moment that we did not laugh or joke about something? Stay cool brother and remember, I'm only a phone call away.

Tiffany, They just don't make'em like you anymore. You are a wonderful soul and I am glad to have met you in person.

Deb, You are a woman after my own heart. Thank you for all the wonderful conversation.

There was just so many awesome people at this Indiemeet and I left heavy hearted and inspired by you all. You know who you are... Wink

I will definitely be attending next year, God willing...
